This edition features Sam Burr, Regional Vice President at SSA Group and SSA's Employee of the Year. From mentoring future leaders to creating memorable guest experiences, Sam shares what hospitality means to him and the lessons he's learned throughout his career with SSA Group.

SSA Group Employee Spotlight

Sam Burr's journey with SSA Group began as a job that put his food and beverage experience to work. Today, it has grown into a career defined by leadership, mentorship, and continuous growth.

Recently recognized as SSA's Employee of the Year, Sam credits much of his success to the people who have invested in him along the way. We asked him what 452 Hospitality means to him and the experiences that have shaped his approach to leadership.

1. You've been part of SSA since 2013, starting at Hogle Zoo. What is it about the people, culture, and work that has kept you here?

That's a great question. I'd say all of the above.

Like many SSA Group employees, I initially started with the company because I simply needed a job and had food and beverage experience. I have been fortunate to have countless mentors over the years who have helped me become the leader I am today.

I'd encourage anyone reading this to reach out to someone within the company they think they could learn from. Most likely, they’ll take the time to help you grow as a leader. Even if they are above you in the org chart, don't be afraid to ask for help, as long as you genuinely want to listen and learn. You may be surprised by what happens next and what doors may open for you.

Growth is another reason I've been with SSA for 13 years and counting. Nothing has been handed to me, but I've earned and been given many opportunities to grow. Some required relocation, some didn’t, but every one of them helped me become a better, more well-rounded leader.

"The biggest lessons I've learned from my mentors are to stay curious, thoughtful, and engaged—and, just as importantly, to learn when to speak and when to listen."

2. What part of your own story or personality do you bring into the way you show hospitality?

In my experience, the more respect you show others, the more you get in return.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "So-and-so is hard to work with," or, "These guests have been difficult," only to have a positive experience by showing those same people clear, transparent, and genuine respect.

I believe in the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. I always make a point to smile when meeting someone new and make eye contact. Positivity, much like negativity, is contagious, and I try to approach every opportunity with positivity and respect.

I also played a lot of sports growing up. One thing I learned is that no matter how talented one individual is, a cohesive, selfless team will win 10 out of 10 times. I strive to be a great teammate and understand that my role changes depending on the situation.

3. What does 452 Hospitality mean to you in your day-to-day work?

It's all about respect and making guests feel welcome.

Notice I said guests, not customers. I think 452 Hospitality is deeply connected to that mindset. A guest is someone you welcome into your home, regardless of their financial value to you. A customer is transactional in nature and only valuable to you if they make a purchase.

Whenever I hear an employee or manager say "customer," I politely remind them that these are our guests. I believe that simple shift in language influences how we treat people, and it aligns perfectly with our goal of delivering industry-leading hospitality.

4. Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of the impact you made for a guest, teammate, or partner?

About 10 years ago, when I was the Operations Manager at Dallas Zoo, a guest and his young son approached me during a special night event. They were starving and couldn't find a place to get chicken tenders. The nearest café was a decent walk away.

I started to point them in the right direction, but my training reminded me that it's always okay to go out of your way to help a guest. Instead, I asked if I could walk them there. (This was before Attractions.io.)

Several minutes later, we arrived at The Prime Meridian Café, and they were incredibly grateful.

A few months later, I suddenly heard someone yelling, "Sam! Sam! Sam!" from across the zoo. I turned around to see the same father and son running toward me.

They told me they were so happy to find me because they wanted to thank me for what they called the best guest service they'd ever received. They explained they were new members who had never visited after dark, were completely turned around, and hadn't eaten lunch that day. Walking them to dinner made them feel special and cared for.

Honestly, it nearly made me emotional because they were so genuine, and I had simply done what I felt was the right thing.

I've never forgotten that moment, and it's why, to this day, whenever a guest stops me with a question, I always try to go the extra step to help them.

5. You were named SSA Group's Employee of the Year. What did that recognition mean to you?

I was honestly blown away by this. I did not expect to win this award.

I am very grateful, but it’s also a reflection of the leaders who have invested in me and the team I work with. Without them, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to earn this award.

To me, it's important to note that this is not an individual award, but a team award. I just happened to be the individual recognized.
