More than 1.1 million guests visited the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden during its latest fiscal year, marking the highest annual attendance in the Zoo’s 124-year history—and its third consecutive record-breaking year. The attendance milestone also drew local attention, including coverage from KFOR.
It’s an exciting milestone, but also creates a new challenge: What does it take to deliver a great guest experience when more people than ever are walking through the gates?
At the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, it means close collaboration behind the scenes. SSA Group’s culinary, retail, and catering teams work alongside Zoo leadership to anticipate demand, respond to attendance patterns, and adjust operations as busy days unfold.
From shifting labor and service points to adapting menus and preparing for major attendance periods like Spring Break, teams are working toward the same goal: making sure growth strengthens the experience rather than adding friction.
“Our operations have to be seamless and the dividing line has to be invisible to the average guest,” said Travis Byrd, SSA General Manager at Oklahoma City Zoo.
Our latest case study goes behind the numbers to explore how that collaboration helped Oklahoma City Zoo navigate a record-breaking year—and what other cultural attractions can learn from the approach.
Read the case study to see what goes into supporting the guest experience during record-breaking attendance.
