At SSA, we believe in enthusiasm, passion, and being an expert in what you do, not just because of your experience but because you love doing it. We hire people who enhance our culture and our business, and we’re proud to share more about them in our This is SSA employee story series.
In this installment of ‘This is SSA’, we interviewed Daron Fowler, VP of Retail here at SSA. Over the past five years, Daron has climbed the ranks from General Manager to VP, showcasing determination, leadership, and a drive to innovate. Read on for what initially drew him to SSA, and how the company’s culture has shaped his path to leadership.
Tell us a bit about your journey at SSA.
I joined SSA five years ago after working as a GM at Pier 1 Imports, Ed Hardy, and Lush Cosmetics. Since then, I’ve grown from General Manager to Area Manager, District Manager, Senior District Manager, and now Vice President of Retail. Each role challenged me to think bigger, lead more effectively, and find innovative ways to drive success.
What stands out about SSA is the trust and autonomy I’ve been given to make an impact. It’s not just about the titles—it’s about the culture of collaboration and growth that empowers people to thrive.
What drew you to work for SSA? How is SSA different from previous work experience?
I was drawn to the subject matter at the Center for Civil and Human Rights. I had never considered working at a cultural attraction or heard of SSA, but I felt an immediate connection to this opportunity. The biggest difference was the autonomy. In traditional retail, most decisions are made for you, and your job is to execute them. At SSA, it was not only my responsibility to execute but also to drive revenue through traditional means, as well as through innovation and partnerships.
How do you keep your team motivated and inspired?
It is our internal culture and the personal connections we make that drive our motivation and inspiration.
We have a very active Teams group chat that covers everything from inventory questions to finding things in SharePoint, to sharing photos of someone's senior graduation. It's the focal point of our culture and the exchange of knowledge. One of the highlights is our weekly 'Friyay,' where someone is nominated to ask a non-work-related question, and we all participate. It's a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues more personally.
My team will tell you that I strongly believe in genuine communication. If I have a question, or if they ask something, I call and talk it through. I encourage them to do the same and to build relationships beyond just with me. Above all, they know that their voices are valued. Even though we are spread across the country, I don't take the time I have with them—whether it's on Teams or in person—for granted.
How do you recharge outside of work?
I enjoy cooking, whether it's putting my own twist on classic dishes or trying out new recipes, and I take great pleasure in sharing meals with loved ones. I also love using my creativity to plate the food!
Which SSA value do you resonate with most and why?
Curiosity to advance: I am a lifelong learner, passionate about both useful and trivial knowledge. I always find it exciting to come across new information!
Share a proud moment or significant achievement in your role.
AZA Zoo Day at MDZ in 2022: After the last guest left, I was struck by a sense of pride as I looked around the store. Despite the curveballs thrown at us during the new store transition, which led directly into the Zoo Day event, our teamwork and determination helped us achieve our common goal. While everything wasn't perfect, the accomplishment was immense. Thoughts of that day still give me the feels.
Anything else you’d like to share?
To me, your career (and your life) is about being open to new possibilities. It could be a new challenge at work, or you know, it could be your future husband sitting next to you on an airport bench. When life hands you these moments, I challenge you to say yes.
